Note-Taking for Consecutive Interpreting: A Skill-Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:
Note-taking for consecutive interpreting is an important skillset for interpreters. In this workshop, we will discuss theoretical and practical aspects of note-taking for consecutive, with a focus on dialogue interpreting. A significant portion of the workshop will be dedicated to practice. Attendees should bring paper and writing utensils that they can use for note-taking practice. The workshop is primarily aimed at interpreters who have had little or no formal instruction in consecutive note-taking; it will also be of interest to those seeking a refresher on consecutive note-taking techniques.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
In this workshop, participants will:
- Discuss the place of note-taking for consecutive interpreting in the interpreter’s toolkit
- Apply approaches & techniques for note-taking for consecutive interpreting
- Engage in activities aimed at increasing note-taking skill
PRESENTER: RACHEL E. HERRING
Rachel E. Herring holds an M.A. in Translation and Interpreting (English/Spanish) from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Masters of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training from the University of Geneva, and a PhD in Interpreting from the University of Geneva. She is currently Director of the Translation and Interpreting Program at Century College and a per diem staff interpreter at Children's Minnesota. She tweets @herring_r_e and blueskys at @reherring.
