Introduction to Genetics, Oncology and Cancer Genetics

4 Continuing Education hours

When: Saturday September 24th, 2016

Time: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm

Genetics and genetic counseling encounters present tremendous challenges for healthcare interpreters. Highly technical vocabulary and complex medical concepts often make it difficult for many interpreters to understand, much less accurately convey what genetic counselors are saying.

Presented by

Ana Locke, an UMTIA Board Member, has a Certificate in Interpretation and Translation from the U of M, and a BS in Veterinary Medicine from Colombia. She currently works at Hennepin County Medical Center.

As part of a pioneering program at UCSF to help genetic counselors communicate more effectively with their patients, veteran interpreter trainer Cindy Roat and UCSF anthropologist Dr. Galen Joseph have teamed up to create a new curriculum to prepare interpreters for cancer genetic counseling sessions. This curriculum, designed for interpreters who have already received basic training, contains all the content, lesson plans and multi-media materials necessaryfor a four-and-a half-hour workshop, which covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Genetics, Oncology and Cancer Genetics
  • The Vocabulary of Cancer Genetics (including bilingual glossaries in English-Spanish, English-Cantonese/Traditional Chinese, and English-Russian)
  • Practice interpreting, including bilingual dialogues in English-Spanish, English-Cantonese, and English-Russian.
  • Interpreting Challenges
