Description:
To ensure positive outcomes for the clients, interpreters and Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) need to successfully collaborate during the assessment and treatment sessions with individuals with communication or swallowing disorders.
In the first portion, SLPs will describe the role of a Speech-Language Pathologist in assessment and treatment of various communication disorders, developmentally normal language acquisition stages, an overview of terminology for communication and swallowing, and age-appropriate strategies for working with clients.
In the second portion of the workshop, interpreters will participate in small dynamic learning groups to discuss challenges and identify solutions that can be put into practice to best serve clients. Topics for discussion will include terminology and cultural differences that hamper communication, as well as challenges that are unique to medical and educational settings. The challenges and solutions identified in each small dynamic learning group will be presented to the entire workshop assembly.
