Infection Control Workshop for Health Care Interpreters

This workshop is a collaboration between Allina Health, CCHI and UMTIA

Healthcare interpreters have long been considered language workers. While it is true that their expertise lies in communication, healthcare  interpreters must also be considered part of the healthcare workforce; and as healthcare workers, interpreters must be familiar with the specialized  knowledge to be safe members of the healthcare team.

Objectives of the workshop:

  • Become a fully competent and safe member of the health care team.
  • Know how to:
    o Avoid bringing germs to patients in health care setting
    o Avoid bringing germs from health setting into your family and community
    o Avoid being a vector between patients
    o Avoid getting sick yourself
    o Practice hand hygiene effectively and use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
    o Avoid getting hurt, abused, irradiated, depressed 
Sections of the workshop:
  • Infection control concepts, measures, and expectations of all health team members
  • Safety risks and responsibilities as a worker in the health care industry
Presenter: Linda Golley

Linda manages the innovative Interpreter Services program at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. She also serves as CCHI (Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters) Vice-Chair. Linda teaches interpreters and health care professionals on topics such as cultural competence at end of life, medical terminology, and barriers to care.
