Can I find an online directory of interpreters or translators for hire?

A good place to start looking when hiring an interpreter or translator is on the online directories. Typically, directories are made up of interpreters and translators who are paying members of an organization. They haven't necessarily taken any sort of exam or test to be on a directory. On the other hand, there are also online registries. These are generally made up of individuals who have met certain requirements and passed exams.

1. To start with, if you are looking for someone local, UMTIA has an online directory of translators and interpreters which you can find here.

2. If you are looking for a medical interpreter, we suggest you look at the the national registries of certified interpreters. The interpreters listed on these two registries have passed national, comprehensive certification exams.

3. If you are looking for a legal interpreter, we suggest you look here:

4. If you are looking for a translator, we suggest you look here. Look for the ATA-Certified translator designation.
