Preparing for the ATA Certification Exam: 'Have I Got What It Takes?'

DESCRIPTION:

The American Translators Association (ATA) Certification Examination is widely considered the “gold standard” of assessing translation quality in the United States. Unfortunately, in most language combinations only about 20% of candidates earn a passing score. This presentation will review some basic information about the exam, such as available languages, the content and length of passages, the current procedure of “computerized” exams, and types of reference sources permitted and prohibited. More importantly, we will address some reasons why candidates fail the exam, and will discuss strategies to improve your chances of passing – including advance preparation and awareness of common errors.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Warning: This presentation will not give out “answers to the test”! The purposes are to learn:

  • the current format and procedures of the ATA exam
  • the exam grading system, including graders’ tools and guidelines
  • typical errors found in candidates’ translations
  • techniques and optimal time frames to prepare for the exam

PRESENTER: LAURENCE H. BOGOSLAW, Ph.D.

Larry Bogoslaw is part of a hereditary line of language nerds. After earning an M.A. in Italian and a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures, he co-founded (with Prof. Bruce Downing) the Minnesota Translation Laboratory, a community language service. Larry has also taught Russian and translation courses at various colleges and universities. An ATA-certified translator (Russian-English, Spanish-English), Larry has been a Russian-English grader since 2005 and currently serves as ATA Grader Trainer. Larry is the chief editor of East View Press, an academic publisher based in the Twin Cities. For fun, he likes translating poetry and songs.
