The Demand/Control Schema developed by Robin Dean and Robert Pollard (2001) is a helpful tool for looking at our work, specifically the challenges we face and the options we have to respond to those challenges. It can help us understand the choices we have and the scope of our decision-making, particularly in terms of the consequences of those decisions.
During this workshop we will, through lecture, small and large group discussion:
- introduce the Demand Control Schema as a framework for analyzing interpreting work;
- apply the schema to health care interpreting situations using picture analyses;
- identify challenges of the work and possible responses interpreters have to address the demands of the job;
- discuss our decision-making latitude while interpreting;
- identify ways we can use this schema to enhance our professional discussions with colleagues.

Paula has been in the interpreting field for over 30 years. She holds degrees in Educational Interpreting, Human Service Administration / Human Resource Development, and a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership with a graduate certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Paula has published several articles on conflict and dispute resolution in interpreting and has presented workshops on ethics and decision making, educational interpreting, conflict management and resolution, mentoring and professional development planning.

Senior Interpreter – ASL , Regions Hospital Interpreter Services
Cindy has been in the interpreting field for 30 years and holds a B.A. in Psychology and a degree in Healthcare Interpreting from St. Catherine University. She has worked for 27 years at Regions hospital and currently has the opportunity to be part of a staff of over 100 interpreters including 14 sign language and over 90 spoken language interpreters representing 12 different languages In addition to her work with ASL and Deaf Culture she has traveled to Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroun, Haiti, Guatemala and Argentina and has been studying Spanish for 3 years. As a life-long learner she has enjoyed studying Interpreting Ethics and the Demand-Control Theory among other things and sharing what she learns with co-workers via workshops and in-services.
