DESCRIPTION:

This interactive workshop is intended for interpreters aiming to develop their knowledge and skill related to ethical decision-making. Participants will explore approaches to thinking about ethics and decision-making in interpreting and be introduced to frameworks for effective, ethical decision-making. This workshop may interest aspiring and novice interpreters and to experienced interpreters who are not familiar with frameworks such as Role-Space and Demand-Control Schema. It assumes a basic awareness of core ethical tenets for interpreters. The workshop requires use of participants’ camera and microphone for interactive elements. Participants will be asked to complete approximately 2 hours of work between the two zoom sessions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the importance of ethical decision making in relation to interpreting.
  • Explore aspects of visibility, agency, and professional discretion as they relate to interpreting.
  • Explore Demand-Control Schema and Role-Space as frameworks for situational analysis and decision-making in interpreted interactions.
  • Apply concepts from Demand-Control Schema and Role-Space in discussion of case studies.
