Genetics, Genetic Counseling, and Interpreting: An essential collaboration

DESCRIPTION:

Genetics is increasingly being incorporated in all facets of medical care for pediatric and adult patients and genetic testing is becoming the standard of care for many conditions. Positive genetic testing allows medical providers to make appropriate medical and developmental recommendations (surveillance and treatment), give prognostic information to families, provide information to families regarding risks for other family members, and give family planning information for this patient and other family members. Genetic counselors educate families about various testing options and possible outcomes, obtain informed consent, and after a diagnosis is made, help families adjust to that condition. The collaboration between genetics providers and interpreters is essential to ensure that families are making informed decisions and fully understand their new diagnosis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• a review of basic genetics concepts, 
• discussion around the process of a genetic evaluation commonly used,
• and reviewing how interpreters can best help to facilitate these visits.

PRESENTER: BEAU CRABB, MS, CGC

Beau Crabb is a genetic counselor at Children's MN. He has worked in the Genetics and Genomics department at Children's since 2012. His role involves meeting with families in clinic to explain genetics concepts and testing options, educating them about specific genetic diagnoses, and providing psychosocial support. Beau received his master's in Genetics Counseling from the University of Colorado-Denver in 2009. After receiving his masters he worked as a genetic counselor in the Minnesota Department of Health Newborn Screening Program before transitioning to Children's in 2012. When not providing genetic counseling to families Beau likes to spend his free time running and hiking, taking nature photos, baking sourdough bread, and following his favorite soccer teams Liverpool and Minnesota United.
