Guest Speaker Aida Azzazi is a Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) District Interpreter & Translator for Special Education. Aida is assigned to 23 schools, trains interpreters across the district and has developed a project to encourage and provide guidance to native bilingual speakers to become interpreters called “Interpreting as a Career”. She has presented this orientation session at Hamline University and to MPS students. She completed the University of Minnesota Program in Translation and Interpreting and has a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Aida is a Board Member of the Upper Midwest Interpreters Association (UMTIA) and was on the planning committee for the 2017 UMTIA Interpreter Conference held at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
Aida’s presentation “Interpreting as a Career” explains the difference between interpreters and translators, what qualities are needed, and why their work is important. It includes memory exercises and videos on interpreters demonstrating the consecutive and simultaneous mode and a translator from the United Nations who stresses preparation and training. The goal is to encourage bilingual speakers to view their language as an advantage, not as a deficiency, and encourage them to strengthen and refine their skills.
Hope to see you there!!
