Language Access Communications Intern (Summer 2017) – Madison, WI

Position Title: Language Access Communications Intern

Location: Madison, WI Number of Positions: 1 Internship period: Summer 2017 (May-Aug)

Pay Rate (depending on qualifications): $10.00- $15.00 per hour

Hours: Monday through Friday, 15-25 hours per week between 9am-5pm.

Eligibility: Summer Affirmative Action Internship Program (SAAIP) internships are open to students currently enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution. Post-secondary institutions may include technical schools, two-year colleges, four-year colleges, or graduate and professional schools. Additionally, SAAIP interns must reside and/or attend school within the state of Wisconsin.

Position Description: UW Cooperative Extension provides educational programming throughout the state of Wisconsin. The language access communications intern will work on projects that aim to inform Cooperative Extension staff about linguistic and other socio-cultural factors that create access barriers to educational programming. This position will help develop and manage website content, visuals, infographics, brochures, resources, tools, and other materials as needed to help staff better serve linguistically and culturally diverse populations through its programming.

This position will allow the intern to develop a deeper understanding of how federal laws and policies protect the language rights of limited English proficient (LEP) individuals in federally funded programs. It will also expose the intern to the different types of educational programming Cooperative Extension provides, especially those targeted toward underserved and underrepresented communities across the state. Lastly, the intern will come away with a better understanding of Wisconsin’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity.

We have a particular interest in receiving applications from candidates who understand and value how knowledge of self, language, culture, and community enhances their professional goals, skills, and assets.

Provide interpretation services to international clients who are receiving therapy, social, and medical services.  Interpretation is typically in a face-to-face setting, but there may be periodic need for phone interpretation or document translation.  Interpretation services are provided on a part-time, as-needed basis in St. Paul.  Hours vary, but typically interpreters will work approximately 2-4 hours per week. The individual in this role will provide support to bilingual parents and students to work towards strengthening the family’s connection with the school system, teachers, and administrators.

In order of importance

  1. Precisely and accurately interprets all clinical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient’s native language.
  2. Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
  3. Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.
  4. Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include contacting patients with appointment reminders.
  5. Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with QuadMedpolicies and standards.

  • High-School Diploma or equivalent; Successful completion of conversation/translation competency testing in secondary language Knowledge of Medical Terminology.

There is a short-term opening within the Special Education/English Learners Team of Minneapolis Public Schools for a special education citywide interpreter. A current Spanish-speaking interpreter is taking a short term leave and her spot will need to be filled from January 6, 2016, through March 31, 2016. There is the possibility of making the position permanent if the employee does not return. The position is for 30-35 hours/week. The pay is approx. $18.00-$20.00/hr.
