SUMMARY

Under general supervision provides translation/interpretation of services, both oral and written, for Somali speaking students and families in due process meetings, evaluations, home visits, and phone conferences.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work under the guidance and supervision of certified educational staff to provide translation/interpretation (both oral and written) for Somali speaking students during:
    • Pre-referral process, special educational evaluation process, IEP team meetings, progress review meetings or conferences.
    • Home visits and phone conferences with certified staff present with Somali speaking families.
  • Translate orally and in writing due process forms for Somali speaking students in Federal Setting I-IV programs, upon request.
  • Create, maintain and record weekly schedule using technology based software system and provide to supervisor.
  • Attend and participate as an active member in scheduled ELL/Special Education Team meetings.
  • Promote a culture of respect, support diversity, explain social and cultural norms, de-escalate situations of personal conflict or confrontation, and enforces District policies and rules of conduct.
  • Monitors and maintains documentation, files, and records of interpreter services to students and/or families, educational staff; assures all required written reports are completed and submitted on a daily basis.
  • Communicates with parents, students and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining strict confidentiality of personal information.
  • Provides customer service to parents and guardians, answers questions, and explains school rules.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

The part-time Youth Worker position is a good way to get your foot in the door in MPS and also works well for those who aren’t available full time. This is a Interpreter/Translator position with Court Language Access Services (CLAS) of the Oregon Judicial Department for the Spanish language.

This position provides court access to persons who do not speak English, or have limited English proficiency, through translation of court forms and documents, and through interpretation using simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes.  The person in this position supports the delivery of language access services through educational activities.

This is a full-time position and the work schedule currently is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  It is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per work week.

Language Access Communications Intern (Summer 2017) – Madison, WI

Eligibility: Summer Affirmative Action Internship Program (SAAIP) internships are open to students currently enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution. Additionally, SAAIP interns must reside and/or attend school within the state of Wisconsin.

Position Description: UW Cooperative Extension provides educational programming throughout the state of Wisconsin. The language access communications intern will work on projects that aim to inform Cooperative Extension staff about linguistic and other socio-cultural factors that create access barriers to educational programming. This position will help develop and manage website content, visuals, infographics, brochures, resources, tools, and other materials as needed to help staff better serve linguistically and culturally diverse populations through its programming.

This position will allow the intern to develop a deeper understanding of how federal laws and policies protect the language rights of limited English proficient (LEP) individuals in federally funded programs. It will also expose the intern to the different types of educational programming Cooperative Extension provides, especially those targeted toward underserved and underrepresented communities across the state. Lastly, the intern will come away with a better understanding of Wisconsin’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity.

We have a particular interest in receiving applications from candidates who understand and value how knowledge of self, language, culture, and community enhances their professional goals, skills, and assets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In order of importance

  1. Precisely and accurately interprets all clinical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient’s native language.
  2. Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
  3. Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.

Education:

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a Health Care setting preferred.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Interpreter/Translator Certificate and/or Certificate of Competency from an approved Interpreter/Translator training program.

  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
