To support further education of interpreters and translators by providing scholarships on behalf of the Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association to individuals actively pursuing a degree or certificate in the field of translation and interpreting. Preference is for students in languages of lesser diffusion.
All applicants must show proof of high school diploma or an equivalent, acceptance into a university level program in Translation or Interpretation and pass the language screening test selected by the program for A & B languages (Example: Oral Proficiency Interview or OPI).
The scholarship will give priority to individuals interpreting in languages of lesser diffusion based on the data provided by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) (this would be those who speak a language which is not among the top 10 non-English languages in the state).
UMTIA will publicly recognize the scholarship winner at an UMTIA event (either a workshop or our Annual Meeting). We encourage applicants and scholarship winners to participate in UMTIA events to become familiar with the profession and UMTIA members.
IMPORTANT: UMTIA reserves the right to request further information from the applicant in order to better determine their qualifications. Upon acceptance, the scholarship funds will be awarded only after the student has submitted evidence of completion of a course in one of the Translation and Interpreting programs mentioned above.
