VIDEO: Instant Translation Gadgets

Have you heard about the new devices hitting the market that claim to provide instant translations? These gadgets often include some sort of earpiece and perhaps a speaker too. Ever wonder how they work or what they look like? Here’s a video blog titled “The Tech Savvy Interpreter” put out by Barry Olsen that demonstrates how well these devices work – or don’t. Starting at minute 7:00 of the video, you can see a real-life test drive of a conversation between an English-speaking patient and Spanish-speaking doctor.

Barry, of course, is a veteran conference interpreter, one half of InterpretAmerica and a well-known professor of interpreting at MIIS (Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.)

In this video, Barry is showcasing the Lingmo Translate One2One Earpiece, but they’re all somewhat similar. Wondering what’s behind the technology? He discusses that too. He’s easy to understand. Neither dismissive or alarmist. And fun to watch.
