Teach Machines a Second Language! It’s Good for Them

If you’ve ever had a tussle getting Siri or Alexa to understand you, you see the problem. Like your spouse and children, they don’t always understand you.

We all want our chatbots and automated services to improve. Here is a cool and recent strategy: researchers are teaching machines a second language.

That’s right. If you teach machines another language before you teach them to interact with us messy-minded humans, the algorithms learn more about context and the relationships between words. Believe it or not, that experience helps machines to get less confused with humans.

We’ve all heard about the hundreds of studies that say learning a second language is good for us. Who guessed it would also be good for machines? .
